‘I didn’t expect to see you here.’

Rebecca sounded tired.

‘Evidently…’

Jacob’s petulance was unintended. He’d been waiting in the lobby for almost two hours. He’d been pleased to discover that the seats were comfortable and the amenities clean. In fact, he’d concluded that the lobby was homelier than his own residence – a revelation that left him feeling somewhat bitter. He apologised. ‘I’m sorry, I wasn’t quite sure when you might be back…’

‘Doctor Jaeger had me working late. I think I must have upset him somehow...’

‘Yes… I think I might know something about that…’ he confessed.

She raised an eyebrow. ‘You do?’

‘Maybe… Look, perhaps we could talk about it in your flat. It’s not something I’d want to talk about in public.’ He cast his eyes about the lobby. It was empty, but he still felt conspicuous.

‘Fine… You can cook me up something while I take a shower,’ she replied wearily.
